Baldwin County Heritage Museum opens “Shipwreck” exhibition

“Shipwreck! Treasures from the SS Republic” will be on display at the Baldwin County Heritage Museum in Elberta, Alabama, beginning Sunday, August 31. The discovery of the wreck, the high-tech exploration and the recovery efforts undertaken have all garnered worldwide media attention, such as an hour long National Geographic program. “Shipwreck! Treasures from the SS Republic” exhibit will also showcase these efforts, along with the vessel’s rich history and the wealth of artifacts and coins recovered. In August 2003, Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreck of the SS Republic, a Civil War-era side-wheel steamship that played a prominent role in the Battle of Mobile Bay, and was later lost in a fierce hurricane off the Georgia coast.  Odyssey Marine Exploration was co-founded by Greg Stemm, whose family has deep-rooted ties to the Baldwin County community.
